Fjällräven is a Swedish outdoor clothing and equipment company who are committed to making nature more accessible. Keeping in line with the Swedish style sensibilities, the brand focuses on simplicity and practicality, developing functional, durable and timeless outdoor gear for more than 50 years now. As a brand, their core mission has always been to inspire more people to spend time in nature. Their respect for the environment and their belief that their future as a brand and the future of nature are intrinsically connected is what draws people like me to them and their products.
So I never really review products, I never felt the need to. But with my Fjällräven Kånken bag order came a dilema which I’ve since seen on many sites.
For those of you who do not know Kånken is an awsome bag from Sweden by the brand Fjällräven. My mom lived in Sweden for a while so I had quite some exposure to them as a teen. When I went to study in Helsinki (where the hype is less, but there still is…) I could not hold back and had to have my own bag. Since then I’ve encountered this website, which is basically a bag cult where people from all over the world show their Kånken and what they carry in them (and while this sounds surprisingly uninteresting it’s actually really cool and artistic!).
So here you are, you’ve found your way into the workd of Kånken and are now trying to decide which will be your first (believe me, if you own one, you want more…). If you’ve decided on the colour than congratulations! That for me was always the hardest task (too much to choose from!). But what to choose? A Classic or a Mini Kånken? If you’re like me and sizes in inches and volume in liters do not tell you much, than this blog is for you. I will try to illustrate to you in a practical way what the difference in size is so you can make a good choice for the classic or the mini (or both, like me …)
Classic versus Mini
So I’ve started by taking a picture of both bags ‘filled up’. This is when both are quite full but still not extremely expanded. As you can see both fit quite the amount of stuff (also the mini!).
I had a hard time filling up the classic cause so much stuff fits in!
The Kanken Mini BackpackMade with a hard wearing material called Vinylon F fabric, the Kånken Mini can be carried as a backpack or a bag using the convertible straps. The classic Fjällräven logo (the little red fox curled up inside a white circle) features prominently on the front of the backpack. The mini backpack has a volume of 7 litres and is very lightweight at just 220gms. It is suitable both for children as well as for adults who prefer a small backpack. I found it perfect for my petite frame. Despite its small size, it packs in a lot of space. It is perfect for my countryside adventures easily holding my wallet, sunglasses, phone, some snacks, a small water bottle, iPad, an umbrella and other bits and bobs. The mini backpack is a perfect alternative to a handbag especially when you are out exploring the outdoors.
This classic backpack is equally suited to journeys to and from school or work, as it is to trekking and travelling. The material is hard-wearing, lightweight Vinylon F fabric that is able to withstand dirt and wetness. The spacious main compartment has a large opening with a zip, which makes it easy to pack and unpack. It has two flat side pockets and a zipped pocket on the front, perfect for those bits and bobs that you want to keep close at hand. The included PE foam seat cushion is stored in the interior back pocket where it prevents the contents of the backpack from poking against your back – and is always within reach for when you need to take a break and sit down, wherever you may be. The carrying system is simple but practical and consists of handles at the top and slender, adjustable shoulder straps. The logo on the front is reflective. It also has an address label inside the main compartment.
If you want to go for the mini keep in mind that it is really mini! I use it basically as a handbag. I would not recomend the mini for people who use it for school etc. (it can’t hold A-4 sized papers).
I first bought the mini but quickly felt that I wanted to bring my Fjällräven Kånken ALL the time but I couldn’t. I work as a teacher at a University and my work stuff simply doesn’t fit the mini (its a small binder with A-4 papers). So I started to fold all my papers so I could still bring my Kånken to work …. That was not so wise so I also ordered a classic.
Concluding: You can choose either one depending on what you have in mind doing with it. I would say that the mini is more of a handbag than an allround bag. If you want to bring it to work you will probably soon notice it not being big enough. Best way is of course to buy two but if you do not want to I hope this blog helps you decide!
